Saturday saw Harry travel to Kent for Round 3 of the F6 Championship at the wonderful Buckmore Park circuit. This circuit provides a great challenge for novice and experienced drivers with its mix of hairpins, long straights and massive elevation changes.
This was Harry's 1st ever visit to the track so last years F6 Open Champ Ethan came along to provide driver coaching and team support. With a couple of extra local drivers joining the fray, Harry knew he had a challenge on.
With just 3 laps practice to dial everything in and get used to the track before the heats, Harry put in a respectable 50.2 lap time - matching the others but reporting a lose back end. Ethan has already spotted the issue and the required setup changes were made for heat 1. Starting pole on his 1st visit was never going to be easy and a small hesitation in the 1st corner saw P2 and P3 pass. However with his grip issues sorted Harry wasn't going to let them get away and drover strongly to re take P2. The time lost behind P2 meant that the leader had built a large gap that Harry couldn't quite close in time but he took P2 and reduced his lap time by over a second.
Heat 2 saw Harry starting back in 3rd and again he was in the mix with the top 3 for the whole race. Some good clean racing ensued and Harry took the chequered flag in P2 again.
We made some minor changes in Heat 3 to maxmise Harry's top end but after a bump and spin with #31 in the first hairpin he wasn't able to make the most of it and crossed the line in P4 but did manage to take another half a second of his lap time.
The final of the day saw Harry qualify in P2, knowing his main challenger on the day, Kart #21 was on pole and championship rival #31 Dylan not far behind in P4. A cracking start saw Harry keep his foot in around the outside of the first corner and keep P2 as they entered the hairpin complex with Dylan right behind him. Over the next 12 laps we all had a nail biting view of the top 3 nose to tail lap after lap. With a couple of laps to go Dylan made a small mistake coming out of the hairpin which took some of the pressure off of Harry but a determined and well defended line by #21 kept him in front until the chequered flag.
It was one of Harry's best drives to date and probably his most competitive, big smiles all round as he took P2 overall, the Open Cadet trophy and extended his championship lead as well. Looking back to the teams visit last year showed what great progress Harry is making. His fastest lap in the final a very fine 46.8 - 6ths quicker than Zak at last years race and Harry is on an older chassis.
