Sam & Henry @ Rissington

The former Raf Airfield was host to the Midland Championships this weekend and Sam and Henry decided it was a great opportunity to get some track time down.

With just two very slight spots of rain during the Saturday the whole weekend was a dry affair, Henry had booked in for what would be his first “Rissy” trip and only his second ever race so was very eager to have Sam who had a couple of sessions there under his belt help with his track walk before the team effort, Sam was there for the morning practice only but also to support Henry’s first race from the embankment keeping up the team spirit.

Sam was returning from a huge “off” at Clay during testing so his first session was a shakedown from the rebuild but he managed to lead Henry quickly onto the line before Sam’s chain left him parked typically on the opposite side of the track from dad! Henry pushed on and worked on hard braking and getting the hang of the complex left right before coming in for debrief.

Session 2 saw the chain on Sam’s kart come adrift very quickly, at that point we detected a grub screw issue which was resolved quickly afterward but of course left Sam with one session to improve his previous “pb”. Henry cracked on into the 52’s and came in for further adjustments.

Session 3 saw both lads having a great time with Sam a second a lap faster and despite a lack of experience homing in on the 50 second goal for the day, of course with Sam only having one shot it was a big ask but his strong 51 was a vast improvement and a couple of practices will see him firmly in the pack, Henry stayed with Sam and was enjoying the benefits of a really helpful teammate.

A quick chat with Alan and Kiera who are considering starting out in 2016, the boys let her jump in the karts and showed her the grids, Sam and Dad packed up and we went off for lunch looking toward official practice then heat 1

Heat 1 saw Henry start slightly behind but with no intention of being far away, comfortably on the line he was distracted by the other novice losing control and avoiding him lost time, his effort to stay with the back 4 was monumental and his times reflected his efforts, Henry went home a happy chap and returned for day 2 fully ready

Day 2 saw Henry at the back of a 13 strong grid racing a more experienced Rissy novice, his times now 51.09 average his consistency was getting him around a lot quicker (we have a simple policy of line first - speed later) and he had no issue with racing the latter 4 karts)

Henry finished last but in touch very firmly and we know that he will go very quickly into the mix as will Sam, both lads turned out to enjoy their time at Rissington and both achieved the goals set before them.

Really pleased with both lads, a truly great effort

The team would also like to congratulate Guy Cunnington for his 3rd at PFI this weekend, his second year in Super One Guy has been able to display his potential properly lately and the hard work and commitment going in from the Elliot Motorsport Team reflects his current standing – well done Guy see you soon and thanks for the Rissy tips.
