Harry, James, Jack, Jamie, Henry & Jonathon @ CKC
Rain and drizzle greeted the team at Camberley for their practice session, but with the forecasts showing dry weather to come we were soon setup and ready to go.
It was going to be a busy day with 6x drivers eager to get on track and set about their targets for the day. With the track walks and driver instructions given, the drizzle was showing little chance of stopping so inters were pumped up and bolted on ready for the first session.
Thankfully the weather changed and the track dried quickly so the more experienced drivers were onto the slicks by the second session and the rest of the day stayed dry before a red flag in the juniors late in the afternoon called a premature end to the day.
Our two bambino drivers were in for a real challenge, being mixed in with the novice grid of cadets.
Jonathon was the proud recipent of his new Wright Centaur Bambino kart looking very shiny in his new Viper graphics. It was his 1st time at the track and he showed great determination to get stuck in, getting used to his new kart and working on his lines. Jonathon was a bit miffed after a novice cadet side swiped him and marked his new graphics but it didn't dampen his enthusiam for the day.
Meanwhile, our other Bambino driver Henry was out in his Top Kart, showing great speed and driving skills even at this early stage of his racing. Both Henry and Jonathon dealt extremely well the other cadets on track and made sure they kept to their lines and didn't cause any incidents. As CKC look to build their Bambino numbers we haop to have a dedicated Bambino session in the near future and both of these drivers will be at the front of that pack.
Another driver picking up his new kart for the first time was Jack on his 2014 Project One cadet kart. Unfortuantley carb issues kept him out of the 1st practice session but the team worked to identify them and get him out on track for the next one. It was also Jack's first time at CKC after previously running at Daytona kart club but he quickly showed he has natural speed. He did very well in all his sessions and dealt well with a couple of spins after over braking to avoid others, getting straight back onto the track and chasing down the rest. Jack showed good progress over the day and with some more tution and track time will quickly move up the grid.
James arrived at CKC determined to work on his lap times and driving skills. A great little character, James is a considerate driver making sure he doesn't nudge or tap anyone else, so it was disappointing to see that some of the other drivers thought it was ok to push him around and spin him out more than once during the day. Karting isn't BTCC and at this level with drivers learning their craft its important not to get into a banger race so it was good to see the CKC track marshalls making sure some of those dishing out the contact were given a good speaking to.
Ethan was working with James to help him reduce his lap times and spotting from the top of the hills was quick to point out a few areas where James could make subtle changes to improve his speed. This is where its good to have an ex-cadet racer on the team who can give some great guidance to our younger drivers. James had a good solid day and shows improvement on every session.
Jamie was also out in his cadet after a summer off and looking to get back into the groove after a recent practice day at Clay. Jamie is another novice who hasn't had much track time at CKC so was looking forward to some consistent conditions so that he could maxmise his track time. Jamie has only just started in cadets and with his brother already in MiniMax, his dad had his hands full getting both karts prepped and ready for action. Jamie showed good progress over the day and with a few small tweaks will be quickly reducing his lap times.
Harry was there to get some seat time before the last round of the F6 Championship and quickly settled into the groove, setting good lap times and mixing it with the pack. He used a decent sized grid to work on his 'chasing down' of a designated target kart, with the objective of closing the gap and working on his overtaking. We also had the chance to try some setup changes which gave some good results and helped him improve his lap times in each session.
All of the Veneno drivers showed great progress against their own targets and showed commitment and pace throughout the day. They are a great bunch of lads and work well together both on the track and in the pits. The day was a good learning experience for the lads and also for some of the parent mechanics - one of the joys of the team is the willingness of all of the dads to muck in and help out when needed. We send our best wishes to those juniors caught up in the red flag incident and look forward to our next outing.
